Introduction to online surveys                    By Coara Andrei
You first become aware of online surveys, when you notice a tantalizing ad on some web page that you are visiting, or when you search for home based jobs. The messages regarding online surveys are usually highly intriguing and read something like this:

‘How to make money online in your spare time’

   ‘Get paid for your views’
‘Make hundreds of dollars working from the comfort of your home’

  ‘Get Paid fory our Opinion’

You are curious and you click through and there you are taken into a whole new world of promises and assurances of quick money. Some of them actually work;  some of them leave you frustrated. But all in all, getting free stuff or getting paid  to take online surveys is not a hoax.  It does work and there are many who have benefited by this interesting phenomenon thrown up by the advent of the Internet.

There is no fixed norm in terms of pay out to participants but usually it is in the range of $1-$50 depending on the survey and the information sought. Several companies now use this mode of research including many Fortune 500 companies. These are consumer-oriented companies that pride themselves on understanding the pulse of the market place. The new age thinking brought in by marketing guru Philip Kotler in the last few decades has created a consumer oriented culture among manufacturers of consumer products and in the services  industry as well.

‘The customer is king’ is a phrase used to loosely mean that you, as the consumer, have the right to choose or reject a company’s products based on your likes and dislikes. The companies have to work hard to create products and services that meet your needs and more than satisfy your expectations.

Growing competition and the availability of choice further necessitates this consumer  culture. If a company has a good understanding of the consumer, then they have an edge in the market place. If a company’s competitors have a better understanding of the consumer, then they have an edge in the market place. It’s as simple as that.
